If you’ve ever felt like walking away from ministry…
If you’re exhausted, overwhelmed, and wondering how much longer you can keep going…
You’re not alone.
Most leaders don’t talk about it. Some feel ashamed to admit it. But burnout is more common than most people realize.
According to a 2022 study, 42% of pastors have seriously considered quitting full-time ministry.
1 in 5 pastors have experienced thoughts of suicide or self-harm within the past year.
The good news is that burnout is preventable—and reversible.
There’s nothing noble—or biblical—about running yourself into the ground for the Kingdom. Burnout isn’t a badge of honor. Use this free Pastoral Burnout Self-Assessment tool to check in with yourself regularly and take action before exhaustion takes over.
Burnout often begins in your body. Physical exhaustion chips away at emotional and spiritual resilience.
Go for a 20-minute walk every day. It’s not just exercise—it calms your nervous system, lowers stress hormones, and gives your brain a mental reset.
Prioritize sleep. Aim for 7–8 hours each night. If you’re waking up tired, your body is telling you something important.
Eat like you matter. You are not a machine. Fuel your body with regular, nourishing meals—don’t live on caffeine and skipped lunches. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. Treat it like it’s worth caring for.
You weren’t called to be available 24/7. Constant output with no margin leads to burnout.
Set aside at least one hour a day where you’re fully “off the clock.” That means no texts, no sermon prep, no mental to-do lists.
Spend time with your spouse or kids—with your phone in another room.
Remember: “My kids are more important to me than all the other kids in the world put together.” Let that truth guide your schedule and your boundaries.
Burnout isn’t just about doing too much—it’s about being disconnected from the Source.
Try these three levels of prayer rhythms:
Short-Term: Jesus Prayer – A breath prayer for stressful moments. Slowly repeat:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.”
Mid-Term: Lectio Divina – Meditate slowly through a short Scripture passage. Read, reflect, respond, and rest in it.
Long-Term: Centering Prayer – Set a timer for 10–20 minutes. Sit in silence with God, repeating a sacred word when your mind drifts. Let yourself be held without striving.
Burnout thrives in isolation. Healing happens in community.
Find friends who don’t expect you to be “on” all the time. You need people who see you, not just your ministry role.
Create space for real talk—relationships where you can be honest, unfiltered, and human.
Say yes to counseling. Therapy is not weakness; it’s stewardship. If you’d recommend it to others, be willing to receive it yourself.
You’re not the only one struggling. Other leaders feel the same pressure—and some of them are ready to walk with you.
Form or join a peer support group. Even a monthly check-in call or prayer huddle can make a huge difference.
Vulnerability builds strength. Encouragement becomes mutual. You don’t have to carry it all alone.

Time's up
The Center for Pastoral Renewal provides spiritual and psychological resources to reduce stress and burnout experienced by Christian pastors and leaders. These spiritual and psychological resources aim to reduce pastors’ and leaders’ stress and burnout, while supporting pastors’ and leaders’ self-care, care-giving, and personal growth.
A major cause of burnout is the constant weight of challenging behavior—especially when it feels like you’re carrying it alone. Many of today’s kids are facing trauma, stress, and emotional struggles, and that weight often falls on ministry leaders.
The Reach Hurting Kids Workshop equips your team with tools to respond wisely and compassionately—so ministry feels less like crisis management and more like meaningful connection.
If you’re looking for a way to reduce stress and build a more resilient team, this may be a great place to start.
